PTA Advises that YouTube, Netflix and WhatsApp Need Local Registration in Pakistan

PTA Pakistan has proposed a new law that will force services like YouTube, Netflix and WhatsApp to register locally in Pakistan. The PTA website has a 14-page document containing the new rule.

Known as a regulatory framework, the proposed rule will apply to all over-the-top (OTT) services. These services offer media content over the Internet, including messaging apps and streaming. The framework recommends that various government ministries keep a watchful eye on these services.

One of the key components of this proposal is the requirement that all personal data be kept entirely in Pakistan. This means that businesses including Netflix, YouTube and WhatsApp will have to maintain user data about Pakistanis locally.

A PTA representative, Mulhat Obaid, said public comments on the draft are welcome until July 10. The public is welcome to review the draft and provide comments and suggestions.

Before deciding on new guidelines, the PTA wants to hear from various individuals and groups. Through this feedback process, stakeholders and people can express their views on how these policies may affect them and the services they use.
