Thousands of people attended President Raisi’s funeral in Tehran, Iran.On May 20, 2024, thousands of Iranians gathered in Tehran to mourn the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, who was tragically killed in a helicopter crash. His foreign minister and six others were also killed in the accident while they were on their way to Tabriz.

Mourners filled the streets, many holding portraits of Raisi as they gathered at Tehran University. Here, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led a prayer in honor of Raisi, who was widely seen as Khamenei’s potential successor.

The emotional funeral started from the university and reached Anglab Chowk. After the ceremonies in Tehran, plans were made to move Raises body to Mashhad for additional rites and burial. Mashhad is an important city, and Raisi’s final resting place there holds deep symbolic meaning for many Iranians.

In response to this tragedy, Ayatollah Khamenei has announced five days of national mourning. During this period, various celebrations and public activities will be curtailed as the nation contemplates the loss of its leader. Khamenei also appointed Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as Caretaker President to ensure continuity of government operations during this period of mourning.
